Types of L&I Settlements and Awards
L&I settlements and awards are paid out once the claim is closed. L&I settlement amounts vary widely and typically fall into three categories:
Independent Medical Exams (IME)
An IME is a medical evaluation requested by the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) or a self-insured employer (SIE) to review your medical history and accident details, to establish finding, opinions, and conclusions about your physical condition. Independent Medical Exams (IMEs) are conducted by approved L&I providers, and IMEs are intended to be objective, so no patient-provider relationship is established. Read our IME tips to learn more about how to ensure you receive the L&I benefits to which you are entitled.
Don’t Let an IME Jeopardize Your Case
Once an L&I Claims Manager orders an Independent Medical Examination to fight your claim, you should immediately contact an L&I lawyer. They can identify any tests or procedures that aren’t appropriate for the IME and counsel you on risky or unfavorable subjects you should avoid discussing during the exam.

Attorney Fees
At Emery | Reddy, we put our clients first by working for them on a contingency basis. We understand that, if you are seeking help with an employment, personal injury, or workers’ compensation issue, you are likely not in a position to spend money on representation. In order to allow our clients to put their health first and lessen financial stress, we make sure you won’t have to pay us until you have received benefits and awards for what we help you get; rather than sending up-front charges or fees to our clients for our time and efforts, our expert team instead pays its legal fees through your claim itself. Contingency changes slightly based on the type of claim for which our team is representing you.
